Nanook of the North – Mar. 18th

The Bozeman Doc Series and the Rialto Theater present the opening night of Doc Club at the Rialto. A new series focused on bringing classic documentaries to downtown Bozeman, Doc Club will present a new film every other Sunday at 7pm.

Curated by the programmers behind the Bozeman Doc Series, Doc Club will examine the roots of documentary film. Cutting a broad swath through the history of the form, the series will feature individual screenings of the best docs of the past century, as well as short runs of films focused on different styles, cultures and subject matters.

Doc Club will begin at the beginning. Long considered the first feature length documentary, Nanook of the North tells the story of Inuit hunter Nanook and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh conditions of Canada’s Hudson Bay region. Controversial for its blending of observational and staged footage, Robert Flaherty’s film provides a fascinating look at the early stages of a debate that has continued to this day: Where is the line between truth and fiction in film?
